Only 40 minutes away from Lisbon, Sintra mountain range was inhabited since early times by the Celts who worshiped the godess of the moon and since the XIVth century elected by the Portuguese kings as a summer residence. In 1995 Sintra was classified by Unesco as World Heritage in the category of Cultural Landscape.
The place in Portugal where the Romanticism had its more audacious and exuberant representations in arquitecture: Pena palace, Quinta da Regaleira (manor house), Monserrate palace and gardens. We visit one of these palaces as well as wander through the beautiful Sintra village (you cannot miss tasting the delicious pastries: cottage cheese cake: “queijada” and the custard cake filled in with sweet eggs and almond cream: “travesseiro”).
Leaving Sintra through the scenic mountain road to Cascais, , with a panoramic stop on the way at Cap Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Passing the Guincho windy beach, famous for the practice of surf and windsurf. Free time for lunch at Cascais where you can choose between a proper meal in one of the excellent fish and shellfish restaurants or just a quick meal or snack by the seaside.
Return to Lisbon through the scenic Estoril Coast road (also known as Portuguese Riviera), first along the ocean and after along the river.
